BAINBRIDGE PUBLIC SCHOOLS RELY ON LOCAL TAXPAYER SUPPORT

Since Washington state is not fully funding K-12 education, school districts around the state rely on local tax support (levies) to fill the gap between state funding and the true cost of educating students. In recent history, the Bainbridge Island School District has not operated without local levy support.

We currently have two levies in place: the Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) Levy and the Technology Levy, both of which expire at the end of 2017. Together, they account for about 23% of BISD’s operating budget.

On February 14th – Valentine’s Day – vote YES to renew these levies.

If the EP&O levy is not renewed, there will be cuts to teachers, curriculum, programs, and extracurricular opportunities for students. If the Tech Levy is not renewed, similar cuts would result because BISD would have to take money from the general operating fund to pay for essential technology expenses such as internet, equipment and software.

In short, levy funding is critical to the quality of public education provided on Bainbridge.
